Anthropic, an artificial intelligence research company, launched a new web application for its AI coding assistant, Claude Code, on Monday. The new platform enables developers to create and manage multiple AI coding agents directly from their web browser.
The web interface for Claude Code is now being rolled out to subscribers of Anthropic’s $20-per-month Pro plan, alongside its $100 and $200-per-month Max plans. Users with these subscriptions can access the tool by navigating to claude.ai and selecting the “Code” tab, or through the Claude iOS application.
This launch represents Anthropic’s latest strategic effort to expand Claude Code beyond its initial command-line interface (CLI) tool. The company aims to make AI coding agents accessible to developers across a wider array of environments, increasing the tool's utility beyond terminal-based operations.
The market for AI coding tools is experiencing intensified competition. While Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot previously held a dominant position, several companies, including Cursor, Google, and OpenAI, now offer high-performance AI coding tools, many of which are already available on web platforms. Claude Code has reported significant growth, with a tenfold increase in users since its broader launch in May, and currently contributes over $500 million to Anthropic's annualized revenue. Anthropic Product Manager Cat Wu attributed a substantial portion of Claude Code's success to the company’s underlying AI models, which have garnered favor among developers.
Wu indicated that while Anthropic intends to continue expanding Claude Code’s availability to more platforms, the terminal is expected to remain the core environment for its AI coding product. She stated, "As we look forward, one of our key focuses is making sure the CLI product is the most intelligent and customizable way for you to use coding agents. But we’re continuing to put Claude Code everywhere, helping it meet developers wherever they are. Web and mobile are a big step in this direction."
The shift towards agentic AI coding tools, like Claude Code, which allow developers to deploy autonomous agents, has altered the role of software engineers, positioning them more as managers of AI assistants. Despite the advancements, some studies have indicated that certain engineers experienced reduced efficiency when using AI coding tools, potentially due to time spent on prompting and waiting for AI responses, or difficulties with incorrect outputs in complex codebases. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously predicted that AI could write 90% of code for software engineers within a short timeframe, a shift that may materialize more gradually across the broader economy.
