Google announced Thursday it has enabled the sharing of its custom Gemini AI assistants, known as Gems, a development poised to enhance collaborative workflows within industrial and enterprise environments. This functionality allows users to distribute specialized AI tools, initially introduced as part of the Gemini Advanced paid subscription, among team members, standardizing access to tailored AI capabilities.
Gems are designed as custom AI chatbots or "experts" created for specific tasks. The feature, initially launched last year and expanded to general availability in March, allows users to configure AI models with precise instructions for various scenarios, such as functioning as a learning coach or a coding partner.
The integration of Gem sharing is anticipated to streamline operations within organizations, particularly benefiting subscribers of Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise. This capability addresses the challenge of internal consistency; instead of individual team members developing slightly varied AI assistants for similar tasks—such as optimizing production schedules or analyzing supply chain data—a single, consistently configured Gem can be deployed. This standardization is crucial in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain management, where uniform AI-driven task execution directly influences operational efficiency, data integrity, and compliance across distributed teams.
Sharing a Gem is facilitated through the web application's Gem manager, where a dedicated "Share" icon is available next to created Gems. Similar to Google Drive's file-sharing mechanisms, users can define access permissions, controlling who can view and utilize a Gem, as well as who is authorized to modify its configurations. This granular control is essential for managing proprietary AI applications within corporate structures, ensuring adherence to internal policies and security protocols.
While initially exclusive to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise subscribers in over 150 countries, Google expanded access to Gems for all users in March, alongside the introduction of file upload support. The new sharing feature further integrates these custom AI tools into collaborative frameworks, enabling more agile development and deployment of specialized AI solutions within industrial settings, from automated quality control protocols to dynamic inventory management systems.
