Google is reportedly experimenting with a significant user interface overhaul for its Gemini AI application, shifting its design from a traditional chatbot format to a more visually-oriented, scrollable feed. The changes, observed in a recent version of the Gemini Android app's code, suggest an effort to integrate suggested prompts accompanied by eye-catching photos.
Technology news site Android Authority initially identified the potential redesign through an APK teardown, allowing a reverse engineer to enable and preview the new home screen. The experimental interface repositions shortcut buttons, such as “Create Image” and “Deep Research,” higher on the screen, preceding the new scrollable feed. This feed presents users with specific application ideas for Gemini's AI capabilities, exemplified by prompts like “Teleport me to deep space,” “Give me a vintage or grunge look,” or “Turn my drawing into a storybook.” Other suggestions include “Brainstorm out loud with Live” and “Send me a daily news roundup.”
A Google spokesperson, when approached for comment, stated that there was “no announcement to be made just yet,” indicating the feature is not yet live to the public. The proposed interface aims to guide users with specific AI application suggestions, moving beyond a generic chatbot prompt, and to enhance visual engagement within the app.
This potential redesign follows Gemini's ascent to the top of the App Store charts in September, partly attributed to its integration of the Nano Banana AI image model. Gemini held the No. 1 ranking on September 12 before being superseded by OpenAI's video editing app, Sora. Market observers suggest a visually richer Gemini app could intensify competition with rival platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT, which maintains a more minimalist interface.
