French artificial intelligence startup Mistral has launched Devstral 2, a new AI model engineered for coding tasks, alongside Mistral Vibe, a command-line interface (CLI) designed to automate code generation and manipulation through natural language. These releases signal the company's intensified efforts to compete with established AI developers in the growing sector of coding-focused large language models.
Devstral 2 is presented as a next-generation coding AI model, following the recent introduction of the Mistral 3 family of open-weight models. The model is available in two configurations: a full-scale version and Devstral Small. The larger Devstral 2 model comprises 123 billion parameters and requires substantial computational resources, specifically at least four H100 GPUs or equivalent for deployment. It operates under a modified MIT license. Pricing for the Devstral 2 API, following an initial free period, will be set at $0.40 per million input tokens and $2.00 per million output tokens.
For more accessible deployment, Devstral Small features 24 billion parameters, allowing for local deployment on consumer-grade hardware. This smaller variant is released under an Apache 2.0 license, with API pricing established at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.30 per million output tokens after its free period. Mistral has partnered with agent tools Kilo Code and Cline for the broader release of Devstral 2 to users.
The companion tool, Mistral Vibe, enters the emerging "vibe-coding" market, which has seen growth from companies like Cursor and Supabase. Vibe CLI is positioned to facilitate code automation, offering functionalities for file manipulation, code searching, version control, and command execution. The system features persistent history and is designed to build context by scanning file structures and Git statuses, enhancing its utility in production-grade workflows. Mistral Vibe CLI is available as an extension for use within the Zed integrated development environment (IDE).
Mistral, which has been described as a leading European AI laboratory, holds a valuation of €11.7 billion (approximately $13.8 billion) following a Series C funding round. This round included a €1.3 billion (approximately $1.5 billion) investment from Dutch semiconductor company ASML in September, according to company statements.
