OpenAI Details Feature Expansion, Android Launch for Sora AI Video App
Published:

OpenAI has announced a series of upcoming feature updates and an impending Android version for its Sora AI video generation application. Bill Peebles, head of Sora, communicated these developments via a post on X, noting new creation tools are expected within days. The iOS version of Sora has maintained a top position in the U.S. and Canadian App Stores since its late September launch.

Among the additions are expanded "character cameos," enabling users to create AI personas of pets, stuffed toys, and other objects from recorded video references. This expands upon the existing cameo feature, which allows users to generate AI versions of themselves for video creation. Peebles anticipates a surge in "crazy new cameos" and indicated a user interface update to highlight trending cameos in real-time.

The app is also set to introduce fundamental video editing functionalities, starting with the ability to stitch multiple clips together. OpenAI plans to roll out more advanced editing tools progressively. Concurrently, an enhanced social experience is under development, designed to facilitate new interactions among users, including the potential for dedicated channels tailored to specific communities such as universities or sports clubs.

OpenAI is also working to address user feedback regarding excessive moderation of generated content, aiming to reduce strictness, and is committed to improving overall app performance.

The Android version of Sora, currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, is scheduled for release "soon," according to Peebles, though a specific launch date was not provided. The iOS app has recorded approximately 2 million downloads since its debut less than a month ago, as estimated by third-party app store data from Appfigures, despite its invite-only status and initial availability limited to the U.S. and Canada.
