OpenAI announced plans on Tuesday to construct five new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers across the United States, collaborating with partners Oracle and SoftBank under its "Stargate" project. This expansion is projected to increase Stargate's total capacity to seven gigawatts, an amount of energy sufficient to power more than five million homes.
Three of the new facilities are being developed in partnership with Oracle. These sites are designated for Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and an additional, currently undisclosed location within the Midwest region. The remaining two data centers will be developed in conjunction with SoftBank, with one site planned for Lordstown, Ohio, and the other for Milam County, Texas.
This initiative represents a significant component of OpenAI's broader infrastructure development strategy, designed to support the training and deployment of increasingly powerful AI models. The company's focus on scaling its computing capabilities follows a recent announcement on Monday, where OpenAI confirmed a commitment from Nvidia of up to $100 billion. This investment is earmarked for the acquisition of Nvidia's AI processors and further expansion of OpenAI's AI data center footprint, reinforcing the company's aggressive trajectory in AI hardware infrastructure.
