OpenAI's Sora AI Video App Records Nearly Half a Million Android Downloads on Launch Day
Published:

OpenAI's Sora AI video application recorded an estimated 470,000 downloads on its first day on the Google Play Store, according to new data from app intelligence provider Appfigures. This initial performance on Android follows the app's earlier launch on iOS.

The Android launch generated more than four times the installs compared to Sora's iOS debut, with an estimated 360,000 more downloads, representing a 327% increase. Appfigures noted that this comparison is not direct due to differing launch conditions for the two platforms.

On iOS, Sora was initially available exclusively in the U.S. and Canada and required an invitation for access. The Android launch expanded availability to the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Furthermore, OpenAI had removed the invite requirement for its primary markets, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, and South Korea, in late October, prior to the Android release.

The app previously demonstrated significant traction on iOS, reaching over one million installs within its first week and ascending to the top of the U.S. App Store charts. It currently ranks as the No. 4 app on the U.S. App Store's iPhone Top Free Charts. Appfigures has also revised its initial day-one iOS download estimates for Sora from approximately 56,000 to 110,000, with about 69,300 of those installs occurring in the U.S.

In the U.S., the Sora Android app registered approximately 296,000 installs on its launch day, contributing to the total of 470,000. Sora enables users to generate videos using AI prompts, including a "Cameos" feature that animates users and their associates. The application displays generated videos in a vertical feed format, similar to TikTok.

Sora operates within a competitive landscape, with other AI-driven platforms such as Meta AI, which recently extended its mobile application availability to European users following its initial U.S. debut.
