Target Corporation is set to launch a new ChatGPT-powered shopping application for consumers in the coming weeks, while simultaneously expanding its enterprise partnership with OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence models across its internal operations.
The forthcoming consumer application, slated for a beta release next week, is designed to enable shoppers to generate product ideas, browse selections, build multi-item baskets, and complete purchases, including food items, according to statements from OpenAI.
This initiative builds on an existing enterprise collaboration between the two companies. Target will now deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across approximately 18,000 employees at its headquarters. The integration aims to leverage OpenAI's models for applications such as enhanced supply chain forecasting, streamlining store processes, improving employee support, and powering advanced customer service tools, including AI-driven shopping assistants and personalized gift finders.
Target's deeper engagement with OpenAI aligns with the AI firm's strategic push into the retail sector. This expansion began last month with the introduction of dedicated retail applications from various providers, including Canva, Coursera, Expedia, and Spotify, into ChatGPT. OpenAI has also been advancing its AI-driven commerce capabilities through new offerings like "Instant Checkout," which facilitates direct purchases within conversational interfaces for retailers such as Etsy and Shopify.
