WordPress Showcases Real-World Use Cases for Experimental AI Tool, Telex
Published:

San Francisco, CA – WordPress Project Cofounder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg presented real-world applications of Telex, the company's experimental AI development tool, at its annual "State of the Word" event in San Francisco on Tuesday. Months after its September debut, Telex, described by Mullenweg as a "v0 or Lovable" tool for WordPress, has been utilized within a working WordPress environment to create dynamic web elements.

Telex functions as a "vibe-coding" tool for the AI era, enabling developers to generate Gutenberg blocks—modular components for text, images, and columns—that form the structure of a WordPress website. Despite its experimental label, Mullenweg demonstrated several functional examples built by community creator Nick Hamze. These included a pricing comparison tool, real-time store hours integration with a map link, a carousel of partner logos, and a custom pricing calculator. Mullenweg stated that tasks previously requiring custom development costing "thousands, tens of thousands of dollars" could now be completed "in a browser for pennies." Another developer, Tammie Lister, used Telex to create a new Gutenberg block daily throughout October.

The demonstrations coincided with discussions about broader AI initiatives within WordPress. These initiatives include architectural developments such as the Abilities API, designed to define WordPress capabilities for AI systems, and the MCP adapter. The MCP adapter exposes these abilities, allowing any MCP-compatible tool to interpret and utilize them. Mullenweg noted that this adapter pattern enables WordPress to integrate into AI workflows without duplicating logic or requiring separate integrations for each AI platform. He specifically mentioned connections to tools like Claude and Copilot, which support MCP.

Mullenweg also highlighted current developer practices, where AI tools such as Cursor and Claude Code are used in everyday workflows. He explained that these tools facilitate refactoring projects, searching codebases, automating tasks, and running scripts with WP CLI alongside AI agents. Looking ahead to 2026, WordPress plans to introduce benchmarks and evaluations for AI models to test their performance on WordPress-specific tasks, including plugin modifications, text editing, and interface manipulation via browser agents.
